Judy Blahut

Judy Blahut’s paintings express lyrical natural forms. They are an invitation to reimagine nature through exploration, fracturing, and color.

The process begins by examining and drawing the subject from many different angles, then fracturing those images by overlapping the drawings and selecting out its essence. This creates a certain amount of abstraction while preserving recognizable form. Magnification shows detail, while fracturing and color lead the viewer to an unexpected new relationship with the subject. A shell is no longer just a shell, but a deep exploration of shapes, textures, and colors.

Using acrylic paints and charcoal, the color palette is a direct reflection of her environment. Her studio is situated alongside a salt marsh with a tidal creek running through it. Marsh grasses, live oaks, birds, water, shells, and sand all contribute to seasonal palettes.

Judy Blahut has been a painter nearly her entire life. She is formally trained in painting, with a BFA from Syracuse University. Her fortunate and full life has given her many opportunities for using her creativity and artistic abilities.  She has had numerous professional experiences: art teacher, Montessori teacher, head of school, college faculty member and mother.  Her passion has always been painting.  Judy says, “My paintings are an extension of my emotional and physical life.  They are the most authentic part of me”.
